Interview with Tristan TK Irving

It’s a complicated landscape to be an artist in the middle of a movement. Do you make statements around your ideas, or do you hold back fearing the divide of your following? Tristan didn’t hold back on making a portrait of George Floyd. It became an important piece of his work that drew in attention for more of his work. He began a Dead Celebrity series that shows iconic people in history in his unique style. I’ve been able to sit back and watch Tristan’s following grow alongside his Pet Tortoise Larry, and his Kaws Collection.

It was an interesting conversation in the podcast to hear about his relationship with corporations trying to establish “social equity” with artists and the community. He pursued some with Chrome, and New Seasons and got push back from people who didn’t realize he was black. It’s a shame to see those actions happen, and we hope those people suffer a unique fiery death. But more importantly, we’re happy TK did the right thing in the midst of a movement.
