Nick’s Famous Coney Island - Dive Bar Review

Three Joe's walk into a bar. Actually, two Joe's walked into a bar but were seated next to another Joe, and the good times rolled. I say rolled because hot dogs are tube-like and quite capable of rolling. Don't believe me? Go to 7/11 and look in the glass case.

This week's review is of Nicks's Famous Coney Island, a bar filled with as much charm as it is wieners. The bartender was a super friendly guy whose name is completely escaping me. The beer list is robust, and the food is very delicious. That, however, is to be expected. Suppose you're going to a place looking for what amounts to a chili dog; you expect it's going to taste pretty solid. This place tops that and goes into the realm of great.

However, the real testament when reviewing a place with a menu like this is not how good the food was, but how good you feel after eating it. And honestly, not too bad. When you eat a chili dog at noon with two beers, you know you aren't running a marathon afterwards. There was no need for an afternoon nap or any heartburn medicine.

Please do not misunderstand what a huge compliment this is. Chili dogs are literally the reference food in every heartburn commercial. I also have another person who had the same meal as me (Alex), and he can confirm this. This statement now counts as science. It would be more scientific if we had a three-person case study, but "Other Joe" ordered a chicken sandwich. Terrible food choice of Joe's aside, he also complimented his meal. So there's that.

The other patrons were very friendly, especially our new friend, Joe #3. The walls are covered in very cool vintage sports memorabilia, and the vibe is what you were hoping for. If you are on Hawthorne and you need a drink and a snack please check it out.

I give this place 3 out of 3 Joes.
